What does Complementary Therapy mean?

Complementary Therapies do not focus on diagnosing a disease or offering a cure, but can be used with traditional medicine to reduce the stress and relieve symptoms of illness; they also increase well being by inducing relaxation.

What does Alternative Therapy mean?

They have an individual approach which use methods to determine a diagnoses and can in some cases or by the persons preference be used  instead of traditional medicine:Osteopathy;Chiropractic:Acupuncture:Herbal Medicine; Homeopathy; Always check with your Doctor if you have or suspect you have a medical condition!

What does Holistic mean?

Holistic Therapies acknowledge the physical body and it’s symptoms as just one part of a person, Holistic means the whole person – Mind: Body: Spirit. Holistic Therapies do not concentrate on just the symptoms but search for the cause. From a Holistic view unless the cause is found and eliminated, the relief from symptoms may be only temporary, these symptoms may reoccur and progress to more serious illness in the long term. For a client, searching for a probable cause will involve looking at their life and lifestyle and the way it positively and negatively impacts on their health and well being.

It may be necessary following treatment for a client  to make positive adjustments to their lifestyle ,including diet ,exercise and methods of dealing with life challenges,. While complementary treatments may help a client in the reduction of pain, stress or symptoms ,the client  ultimately has the power  to make any necessary positive changes to continue the process .All of the therapies I practice are Holistic Therapies, therefore a full lifestyle and medical consultation is completed before deciding on a course of treatment. Appropriate homecare relevant to your individual needs will also be discussed. It is important to understand that Holistic Therapies are not a cure all nor a quick fix, it may have taken months or years for a disease or disorder to take root in the body. It may also take time to bring balance back to the body, although some individuals may notice an immediate improvement. If you suffer from a current medical condition or are taking medication it may be necessary to seek the approval of your Medical Practioner before embarking on a course of treatment. Holistic Therapies are complementary to your current medical care and the involvement of your doctor allows him/her to monitor your progress and to make any necessary adjustments to your medical regime.

What is a healing crisis?

Therapists sometimes refer to a “healing crisis” following Complementary Therapies. This is not a crisis as such, but the body’s attempt to rid itself of toxins by kick starting the immune system and its natural healing ability. It is generally of short duration if it occurs at all, occasionally symptoms may appear to worsen, a head cold, skin breakouts or sick tummy may be experienced. An individual may feel tired, as the body works to rebalance itself. This is a natural process as the body works overtime to unclog debris that has gathered perhaps for many years.

Aromatherapy

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a Holistic treatment which involves the therapeutic application of carefully selected and blended pure essential oils dissolved in vegetable based carrier oil. The oils selected are individual to your particular needs and the blend is referred to as an individual prescription. The blend of oil is applied to the skin using a specialized massage of gentle effleurage, pressure point therapy and lymphatic drainage movements. Pure essential oils are obtained from plant  material such as petals (Rose + Ylang Ylang): wood (Sandalwood + Cedarwood): leaves (Eucalyptus + Tea tree). Aromatherapy can trace its roots back through history to the earliest records of the Ancient Egyptians.

Benefits of Pure Essential Oils

Essential oils are 100% pure, oils used by an Aromatherapist are sourced from reputable suppliers to ensure their authenticity and the ethical harvesting of the plants used. Oils are categorised as : Analgesic : Painkilling : Anti—Inflammatory ; Reduces inflammation : Mucolytic : Breaks down mucous : Carminative : Settles digestive system : Hypotensive : Lowers blood pressure ;Antihistamine ; Used for conditions caused by allergies. These are just a few of the many properties of essential oils. Essential oils are diluted in pure vegetable carrier oil before applying to the skin. The Aromatherapist will select a suitable carrier oil for your skin type before blending essential oils into i.e. almond oil is used for those with dry or itchy skin conditions and contains vitamins D + E, sunflower oil is used for oily skins and contains high levels of vitamin E,evening primrose oil may be selected for those with more mature skin, it contains G.L.A.’s Gamma Linolenic Acid along with vitamins and minerals and is a superb moisturiser. Certain essential oils can also be referred to as having additional special uses e.g. Frankincense (Boswellia Carteri) is said to allow clients to let go of the past,Vetivert (Vetiveria Zizanoids) is the Oil of Tranquillity , Ylang Ylang (Cananga Ororata) helps people with anger and has an affinity with the heart, while Geranium (Pelagonium Graveolens) helps to balance the mind & body. Occasionally depending on a client’s particular condition an essential oil may not be suitable. This is referred to as a contra-indication (not to be used),e.g oils that are hypertensive or rubefacient should not be used by clients with high blood pressure as hypertensive oils raise blood pressure while rubefacient oils increase circulation. Oils that are photo toxic increase sensitivity of the skin to sunlight., therefore it should not be applied to the skin before going out in the sun as there is a risk of sunburn.. It is not advisable to apply essential oils to the skin without the guidance of a qualified therapist, Aromatherapy is a specialised treatment, and should only be administered by a qualified Aromatherapist.

How does it work?

The skin and inhalation are the two pathways into the body. When inhaled the aromatic molecules of the oils reach the lungs where they travel across the tiny air sacs of the alveoli into the blood capillaries and then into the systems of the body where they exert their healing effect. The skin is a two way system, letting substances out - excretion (sweat) and taking substances in – absorption. Small molecular substances such as the molecules of essential oils can enter the skin where they travel into the bloodstream and are carried to all parts of the body. When the skin is healthy, the molecules will be easily absorbed, although different oils will be absorbed at varying rates. It is the nutrients of the essential oils & carrier oil that enters the body not the oil itself. It is believed that if an aroma is disliked, it will have no therapeutic effect on the central nervous system.

What happens in a treatment?

An Aromatherapy treatment takes into consideration a client’s physical, mental and emotional needs. A consultation is followed by a full body treatment and homecare. Treatments are highly relaxing, suitable for the stressed, or for those who would like to be pampered, it may also be helpful in the prevention of illness and during times of illness.

Some of the many benefits that may be experienced following a treatment may include:

Relaxation of Mind & Body, improved skin condition, improved blood circulation & lymphatic circulation, reduction in stress, feeling uplifted and calm, there may also be an improvement in problematic symptoms of illness.

Holistic Massage Therapy

What is Holistic Massage Therapy?

Massage has been in use for thousands of years and was practiced across all cultures and continents. One of our most primitive instincts is to “rub” an area of our body which has been hurt or is causing us pain, this increases circulation to the area and reduces pain. There are many styles of massage therapy widely available from therapists, each with it’s own benefits i.e. Swedish Massage , Sports Massage , Deep Tissue and Lymphatic Drainage to name but a few .Massage movements are varied and can involve kneading, grasping, lifting, rolling, pressing, tapping, stroking and friction movements on the skin and the underlying structures. Holistic massage therapy takes the whole person into consideration before deciding on a course of treatment or massage movements to be used.

How does it work? What are the benefits?

It works by releasing stress and tension from the tissues which may be causing distress to the body. It increases circulation of blood and lymph; this helps to bring fresh nutrients and oxygen to the tissues of the body and to remove waste material. Massage moves body tissue and helps to reduce adhesions in the tissues, massage produces heat in the body part and helps to relax tense muscle fibres, whilst also increasing the activity of body cells .The primary benefit of massage is relaxation of the mind and body.

What happens in a treatment?

Following consultation, a body analysis will check for any postural problems which may be contributing to stress and tension in the body. This is followed by treatment and homecare advice. A full body treatment or part body such as the back only can be treated. This will depend on the client’s preference e.g. clients who suffer primarily from tension in the upper or lower back may prefer to only have the back area worked on.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Holistic Japanese healing therapy, it is pronounced “Ray – Key”.Reiki is a laying on of hands healing technique which is thousands of years old, it was rediscovered in the late 1800’s by Dr.Mikao Usui a Japanese Buddist.Reiki can be described as Universal Divine Energy or Universal Spiritual Energy. Reiki is safe, very gentle and non- invasive as a healing therapy.Reiki is not religion based and is used all over the world by people of varying backgrounds, cultures and belief systems. Reiki flows through the therapists crown chakra (top of the head) from Divine Light, through their heart and out through the palms of their hands to the client. It is the pure unconditional energy of the Divine and as it comes from the heart is often experienced as the receiving of unconditional love. The therapist does not influence the flow of Reiki nor can they interfere with it, they are merely the means for it to reach the client.

How does it work?

Reiki works to bring balance to the client‘s body, mind and spirit. Where there is imbalance there is also the potential for disease to occur.Reiki works not just on the physical person but also within the aura. The aura is an electromagnetic field (an energy field) which surrounds each one of us and it is thought that illness or weakness develops here before manifesting in the physical body.Reiki helps to balance the body by clearing stagnant Ki (Energy) from the body, from the meridians (these are energy lines which run through the whole body) and from the chakras (the energy centres of the body). Ki may become stuck or stagnant in the body as a result of unexpressed emotions, illness or traumatic life events .These unexpressed emotions or unhealed traumas may in turn manifest as illness in the physical body. Reiki works on 4 Levels to encourage healing , Emotional Level , Mental Level ,Physical Level and Spiritual Level. Although illness or a disorder may manifest in physical symptoms, healing may need to take place on a deeper level ,such as emotional or mental healing before healing begins on a physical level. To facilitate emotional healing a client may have to let go of old hurts ,anger ,grudges and emotional baggage which is no longer relevant or helpful to them, for healing at a mental level ,negative attitudes may be holding them back. Healing is not the same for every individual ,it may simply mean learning to positively face all the challenges that life puts in your path. Illness can also take us on a path of self discovery , during this time we may learn valuable lessons which ultimately help us to change our outlook or the way we live our lives. The part of our body which is affected may also indicate to us an area of our life which needs to be looked at e.g. pain in the knees— is there a fear of striding boldly into the future or in a different direction, are the shoulders more painful from being weighed down with too many burdens , is the pain in the lower back worse because of feelings of being unsupported in life. An emotion may also be causing a difficulty ,fear is an emotion we have all experienced at one time or another, fear causes the body to tense, this prevents Ki from flowing unhindered through the body .If fear is experienced regularly or for a prolonged length of time, it may also cause a block in the associated chakra e.g. fear of speaking your mind or saying what you really think may manifest as a disorder in the throat chakra. At a mental level , it may be that a rigid and inflexible view or outlook is contributing to stiffness in the body.

What happens during a treatment?

The client is fully clothed and is covered with a light blanket while lying on the treatment couch. The therapist uses light hand movements on the body and above the body. Sensations of intense heat, a gentle warmth, tingling or coolness may be felt from the therapists hands, this is the Reiki energy flowing. Usually there is a sense of peace and relaxation. Occasionally emotions may be released physically; the client may feel the need to giggle, laugh or to cry. These emotions may have been long buried and the client is now able to let go and move forward.

Hopi Ear Candling

What is Hopi Ear Candling?

Ear candling is frequently described or recognised by the name Hopi Ear Candling. It was practiced by many Ancient people including Greeks,Romans,Egyptians and the practice was used for spiritual purification as well as treating the ear. There is also evidence of its use in Europe using rolled waxed tobacco leaves and cloth. Over time the practice faded out but the Elders of the Native American Hopi Indians kept it in use and passed the knowledge down through the generations, Hopi means peaceful ones, they are known for their spiritual way of life and healing knowledge. They used waxed leaves infused with herbs for spiritual ceremonies and the candles used today are named after them. It is through the collaboration of the Hopi and a German company called Biosun who manufacture the candles that this therapy was introduced to the west.

How does it work?

The candles are hollow, completely natural made of cotton, stiffened with beeswax, with infused herbs and honey. The honey & herbs all have healing properties: Sage for clearing negative energy, honey full of vitamins and minerals helps fight infection; chamomile is anti inflammatory and soothing. When lit the air rises and begins gentle suction which can help loosen compacted wax. The ingredients release healing vapours from the herbs: the vapours move down into the ear and create gentle sound waves which massage the eardrum and travel all the way into the inner ear. As the ear, nose ,throat are all connected the vapours have a positive effect on the respiratory tract as they are also inhaled through the air, the effects of the candle help to regulate and balance pressure in the ear. Clients have described the sounds of the candle burning as sounds of rain; the sea; the client will also feel a gentle heat.

What happens during a treatment?

The candle is placed in the outer ear with the client lying down fully clothed on their side, supported by pillows, with the side of the face covered. The candle will burn for 10-12mins, it does not burn down fully as there is a maximum burn line and it also has an inner filter so nothing can fall into the ear. When both sides have been treated the head and face are massaged .After treatment sinuses are clearer, better smell, feelings of peace and relaxation. Residue in the candle after treatment does not as some people claim come from the ear; it simply signifies the condition of the ears.
